Steel, titanium or aluminum: which iPhone frame is best?

Frame material affects weight, how a phone feels in your hand, and heat dissipation. Overall durability also depends on the body design, glass and the circumstances of a drop.

Stainless steel — rigidity and noticeable weight

Used in iPhone 11, 12, 13 and 14 Pro Max.

Pros: a rigid frame, corrosion resistance and a distinctive polished shine. A good choice if you enjoy a substantial feel in your hand.

Cons: steel is denser than titanium and aluminum, so it adds more weight in comparable designs. Fingerprints and small wear marks stand out on polished surfaces. A steel frame cannot protect the glass against every drop.

Titanium — lower weight with high strength

Used in iPhone 15 and 16 Pro Max.

Pros: a high strength-to-weight ratio. In iPhone 15 Pro, the outer titanium band is bonded to an internal aluminum structure that helps dissipate heat. The brushed finish offers a more understated appearance.

Cons: titanium does not make a phone scratch-proof. The surface and finish can still show wear. The word ‘titanium’ alone cannot tell you how hot a phone will get: that depends on its whole cooling system and workload.

Aluminum — low weight and heat dissipation

Used in many standard iPhones, as well as iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Pros: low density and good thermal conductivity. The 7000-series aluminum body in iPhone 17 Pro works with a vapor chamber to distribute heat through the body.

Cons: scratches and impact marks can affect the surface and colored finish. A warm body under load can mean that heat is moving outward effectively. That alone does not let you compare processor temperatures between two phones.

Which should you choose?

Steel if you like a substantial polished frame. Titanium if you value a balance of weight and strength. Aluminum if you prioritize low weight and heat dissipation. Compare the actual weight, grip and features of individual models. A good case is more useful for protecting against impact marks than choosing by metal alone.

Caring for any frame

Wipe your phone with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasives and do not try to polish a colored coating: this can damage the finish.
